As dawn broke, the streetlights, like a silver-beaded garland, welcomed the runners with diverse aspirations. The sky transformed into a warm shield of hope as Chennai's largest running event, the Dream Runners Half Marathon 2022, unfolded.
Over 5,000 runners converged to tackle the distances; some dreamed of standing on the podium, others of crossing the finish line, while some aimed to shave just five minutes off their previous time. Others hoped to overcome injuries, and some ran purely for the joy of it, or to support their friends. If you wondered why every face radiated a bright glow, it was because 5,000 dreams were dawning.
As the race unfolded, determination and commitment overcame constraints, driving the runners toward success. Thoughts wandered to inner champions, and the air lightened with enthusiasm. With each step, the street refreshed, whispering "good morning." The jerseys, sweatbands, bib numbers; everything around appeared golden amidst the green.Â
The celebrations of Chennai's one of the finest marathons in the country have returned in full. The chendamelam is the inevitable part of the run. Every year they arrive at the same spot to cheer the runners and to celebrate the moments of rhythm that are to be cherished forever.
The green audience welcomed each runner with open arms, as trees embraced them with magnanimous shields. No longer ordinary, the runners broke barriers of age, health, path, and time, dreaming of completing the exceptional journey. Their pounding footsteps echoed with purpose, carving a path for a noble cause.
The social cause behind this marathon is priceless. They promote the causes of giving underprivileged people prosthetic legs, helping victims of domestic abuse, and providing financial aid to underfunded schools. The volunteers, the policemen and the medical staff were undoubtedly providing their assistance. Without them, this memory—one that refuses to fade—could never have been created.
The moments of existence were being celebrated by disseminating smiles all around. The gentle whirr of bicycles blended with laughter, their winsome presence a soothing sight. Each smiling face not only became a symbol of solo happiness but also the joy of being one of those who provide support for the needy—of togetherness, inner strength, hope, and ultimately, the transition from "Will I be able to do this?" to "I can do it" to "I did it."
The ends are given for beginnings. The marathon has paved the way for accepting new challenges in life, inspiring runners to finish the longest marathon of all—life. Though their legs may have ached and breaths came in heavy gasps, each step taken leaves an indelible mark; the unyielding human spirit. This exquisite experience might have become an inspiration for all those who have witnessed it.
Sports strengthen our bodies and minds, but marathons? They fortify us from the inside out. And DRHM did just that.
