The second edition of the Nagpur Mahamarathon is a part of the series of marathons by Lokmat spanning across western India to spread the awareness for running.
With a half-marathon, a 10k, a 5k and a family run 3k race, this event had categories to suit all kinds of runners in all kinds of journeys. This flexibility in offering different distances to suit the needs of different levels of runners is one of the best indicators of the future of any race. And this one, as they would say in Nagpur, sure is a lambi race ka ghoda
The Nagpur Mahamarathon had pacers for the longer distances, to support runners hoping for their PB at the race. It also had strong medical support as well as clear race route marking and traffic management. All of these small details are what runners notice the most and return to any race for. The organisers, learning from previous experiences of mahamarathons elsewhere did a great job of consolidating learnings and putting their best foot forward.
There were various cultural fixtures that we have come to expect from the mahamarathon organisers. Marching bands, dancing troupes of children, street installations and what not. All these help the families of participating runners come to watch the spectacle. In addition, it obviously helps the runners themselves feel special and cared for, that so many people should turn up to show them support. This is what it looks like, for a nation of a billion and more, to slowly build a culture of sports appreciation.
As the race gears up to bring more running joy to beautiful Nagpur the next year, and bring more runners into the fold, here's a last look at the enthusiasm that powers this race.
Apart from being a full marathon, it is more importantly an initiative to make the common people run and make everyone finishing the run feel like a winner and motivate the nation to choose a fitter and healthier way of life. An initiative that has seen massive response from the community and given several people their first marathon.
